About the Teachers

Information about students in DC is easily available, but information about the teachers is not. The following pages are designed to inform you about the demographic makeup of teachers within the District of Columbia.

This section is divided into three parts:

  1. Race / Ethnicity: This section highlights the racial/ethnic make-up of the DCPS teacher workforce. Unfortunately, DC public charter schools are not required to release information regarding the teachers they hire. Black and Latinx students are underrepresented by teachers in DC schools, which has adverse effects on student achievement. This section highlights that these students have the lowest state assessment scores, attendance rates, and the highest rates of disciplinary action.
  2. Gender: This section highlights the gender make-up of the DCPS teacher workforce. Unfortunately, DC public charter schools are not required to release information regarding the teachers they hire. Male students are underrepresented by the teachers in DC schools and this page highlights that boys have the lowest state assessment scores, high school graduation rates, and the highest rates of disciplinary action. Information regarding transgender or gender-nonconforming students is limited in the District.
  3. Research: This section presents national research on the importance of recruiting and retaining diverse teaching forces within classrooms and its impact on all students, particularly students of color.
